I think Larry is out of touch on this subject. Its like asking why aren’t Millennial’s getting married as early as the previous generation and also having kids earlier. Because they aren’t. The world is changing quicker than ever before and you cannot look at things the same way as we did 50 years ago.
Young people aren’t going to church as often as our parents did and so kids are living with their partner instead of marrying and living with their spouse. also the cost of living (appts, cars and university) is much more expensive than it was when the bb boomers generation were growing up.
I’d say the reason is more that the millennial’s are not bothering to get married early and they have much higher debt than the bb boomers generation did by the age of 23 and therefor moving out, on their own is just not possible.
On a side note there are a lot more single parents these days and having a child living with them may not be a concern
for them because possibly they are having their child pay them monthly which helps them out and also it may provide them company.
Not sure why this ‘increase’ is deemed to be a concern and I don’t agree with your black and white assessment.
Well, I disagree with Ken’s comments above and I totally agree with Larry (who, by the way, does have a ‘soft’ side) who is able to get past the emotion of the subject and speak to the facts. Parents have created this situation and they need to fix it. Call it ‘tough love’ if you must. We are not setting these young adults up for success. My neighbors had 2 young adult sons living at home and the parents did everything for them – and I mean EVERYTHING. That cripples them – and they are now out on their own and can’t even figure out a budget or how/where to shop for groceries. Yes, things have changed in the last 50 years – and yes, things are more expensive – but it’s all relative. Bottom line is personal responsibility, as Larry says. I learned it the hard way – I am responsible for my own happiness, for my own finances. Me. Period.
Keep up the good work and the direct messages, Larry!
