So you thought marriage was all about sharing. Well, not when it comes to bank accounts. Turns out more and more couples are keeping their money separate these days with finances being the top reason for fights. Larry Winget discusses whether it is best to have a joint account or individual accounts as a couple.

We’ve become a society of weenies. Think about it: we get bad service, for the most part we don’t do a thing about it. We walk down the street and watch people throw their trash on the ground, but we don’t want to say anything to them. Whats happened to us? Well it has to stop. That’s why I wrote this book, Grow a Pair: How to Stop Being a Victim and Take Back Your Life, Your Business, and Your Sanity. Its exactly what we need right now in this country. What I find interesting about the commentary is that the psychotherapist has no respect for others. Your opinion is fine but don’t speak over people. It’s just rude and makes your argument less credible. Fact is a joint account for household expenses is great. It alleviates the worry that basic needs are met and separate accounts for discretionary spending. It’s not a trust issue, it’s a mature, adult function that empowers both with independence. I don’t need to ask for greens fees and she doesn’t need permission to go shopping. That’s where the trust comes in and the empowerment begins. No arguing. Bills are met responsibly and maturity handles the rest. Talk about a control freak. I was surprised Larry didn’t comment about how rude she was…then I realized how it didn’t need to be pointed out, why waste time on the obvious.
Larry – love the way you stayed focused on your POV and, as mentioned above, stayed respectful also. I agree with your approach. Did it the good doctor’s way in my marriage of 22 years – would never do that again! You were right on- she’s in left field (and living in the past). It’s a new world!!

I understand this differently than the first time I listened. Larry isn’t saying to do away with the joint account for household expenses. He is advocating for “blow money” the same as Dave Ramsey. Dr. Ruskin’s rant seems like rhetoric.
