My Dad was a was Safeway manager for 19 years, then a Union representative, then President of the largest union in Oregon/SW Washington. When I was a kid, we were required to pick berries in the summer to pay for our school clothes and have spending money. My Dad told me I had to get myself up at 5:00 am and to the pickup location a mile and a half away or else. I picked berries all June and most of July for five years from age 9 to 14. I went to summer school between 9th/10th and 10th/11th grade so I could graduate early. My birthday is in mid-August so I turned 16 two weeks before 11th grade started. The first day after 11th grade ended, my Dad called me at 8:00 am, told me to get up, get dressed and go find a job. I had a job that day and worked for that company for seven years. Kids aren’t allowed to pick berries anymore. It’s ridiculous. He was a liberal. He made it clear to us kids that we were not to ever rely on anyone else. He instilled strong work ethics, punctuality, and excellence in our work and behavior. He told us we would get college educations, but not on his dime. All his children have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. Three of us have graduate degrees. I have a doctorate. You would have liked him, Larry. You have similar values. Be responsible, do what you are supposed to do, make your own money, don’t be a mooch.
Robyn, absolutely. I started mopping floors, bailing trash, washing out restrooms (floors, toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors), banquet set-up, cutting grass, washing windows, stripping & waxing floors and much more starting at age 14. I had 2 to 5 jobs from 14 to 21 when I graduated from Hamline University. I worked my way through school. Child labor wrong? NO WAY! What’s wrong is child spoiling. Allowing a child to sit and do nothing productive for the family. THAT is child ABUSE.
I am in NO way a Trump fan. But I think this is just a fun story. The kid got to meet the President, get his picture taken at the White House, and gained a LOT of fans(and potentially customers for any future landscaping business). Aside from having a great work ethic, he’ll have a HECK of a story to tell his kids and grandkids. Good job!
